I'm here, I'm alive, I'm procrastinating.

Enough about me, though. Congratulations to [livejournal.com profile] tonya and hubby Mike, who had their baby yesterday. Baby boy and mommy are safe and sound and I hope resting happily.

Back to me, now. I went to Madison on Tuesday at approximately ass-crack-thirty, got there by 8:30am. Gave a very good talk (if I do say so myself) to an enthusiastic and inquisitive group. Went to lunch with the lab bunch, who were all a lot of fun, at the terrace of the student union. The Rathskellar is a very odd little greasejoint in the union that I remember well from the last time I was in Madison for an MPMI meeting in 2002. So it was a strange mix of deja vu and newness nerves. Came back to the lab and talked science and postdoc life with two postdocs, then the first-years took me for an ice cream break in the food sciences department.

Gotta love a school with a food sciences department - these people know good food.

Came back, chatted for a wee bit with the PI, then he took me too the airport for my 6pm flight.

That flight, as most all midwest flights do, was going to Chicago.

Operative term: was

Thanks to 'problems with air traffic control', which is airline speak for 'not gonna give you a damn thing', my flight was delayed by over two hours. That left my choices at two: Fly to Chicago late and sleep on their benches for an ass-crack-thirty flight home to L'ville, or pay for a hotel and stay in Madison for the night, and catch an ass-crack-on-the-dot flight to Chicago and get home by 10 something am.

I dunno, a night at O'Hare didn't sound too keen, since I know the food and bars and shopping and coffee all close early. So I chose to stay in Madison, even though I had absolutely nothing but my purse and my laptop and the clothes I'd been wearing since 4am.

I really was hoping that United would pay for the room, or at least my dinner, or at least give me a freakin' voucher for a drink, but no. I stayed at the Holiday Inn - please remind me never to do that again - for a night of not sleeping and listening to kids and women and slamming doors.

In any case, I got home and I'm finally feeling recovered. Now I have one solid offer (Iowa) and one not yet (Madison). So I still don't know where I'm going, and I still am feeling too distracted to write as much per day as I need to be writing if I ever want to get the hell out of here.

If you have any inspiring words, beyond huggles and mojo, send 'em on please. I'll be back in Bton for a few days starting Wednesday to run two more experiments and give Clay a run at editing a chapter or two of my dissertation. That's all I got for now. I'm feeling absolutely uninspired.
