We've made an offer on a zero-lot in Coralville, IA. It's 2100+ square feet of three-storied lofted goodness with a two car garage and fenced yard, no less. Yes, Jeff and I are leaving the countryside life for the suburbs. Don't worry, it's only temporary. In fact, it's likely to be VERY temporary. My postdoctoral advisors are seriously considering lucrative offers to move to UWashington, Seattle. The UIowa and UW departments have been playing a rather thrilling game of tug-of-war over MP and PS, and their reluctance to say no suggests to me that they will eventually say yes.

So Jeff and I will buy this house (if they accept our counter-counter offer) and I'll start my postdoc and learn all about the lab organization before we pack it all up and leave. Meanwhile he'll ready the house for sale within the year.

Otherwise, I'll start my postdoc and we'll stay in Iowa and Jeff will work on the house and hopefully find gainful employment to keep him from going mad over the next two or three years. Having spent a month with nothing to do but chores and prepping the house for sale, I would certainly sympathise with the madness.

There's a lot of unsure going around, but I think we'll get this house. We just hope everyone gets their paperwork done quickly so we can move quickly and enjoy our second Christmas together in some sort of stability. We'll be away from our families for the first time this holiday season, and nobody's happy about that. Some things just can't be helped, though.

We should hear about the house today. I've got my fingers crossed.

I think we've grown very comfortable and happy with living in the same zip code. Better yet, in the same house. Our long-distance beginnings were stressful, but we somehow knew that the stress and gas costs were a small price to pay for the US we wanted. In spite of all the things that worry us, I'm so very happy that he is with me. Having someone to work, create and play with is more fun than I ever thought possible. Where I used to dream of things I wanted to do, I now have someone to share my dreams with. We complement each other in all the right ways, and the love and confidence we share makes the worries seem smaller and no longer so daunting. Happy me.

That is wonderful.

What are you planning to get a postdoc in?

I'm going to be working with a group who researches cystic fibrosis. Or, rather, the bacteria that tend to infect the lungs of CF patients.

I'll be funded for a year, then I have to apply for my own funding. After all that, I'll be qualified for tenure-track positions in universities or for industry jobs. No more school, no more grades, no more tuition. . . just the glorious freedom of life as an academic.

i'll have to remember to tell my brother's girlfriend about the field you're in...she's had the double lung transplant for CF about 6 months ago...so she's interested in all things CF.

i'm so glad you two have found out that being together all the time is a joy!...good for ya!
