First things first:

Happy Birthday, [livejournal.com profile] ashfault76!!!

I hope you have just a swell day. I've got some Woodchuck here, and I toast it to you.

As for the cookies. . . I really like pfefferneusse, especially with coffee or hot chocolate. Jeff tasted one last night and said, "they're spicy!" He wasn't expecting that, and I think it turned him off. Good thing I only made 4 dozen, huh?

In saucepan (or in a microwave on 1/2 power), combine:
3/4 c. light molasses (I used Brer Rabbit dark, but whatevah)
1/2 c. butter
cook 'til the butter is melted, then cool to room temp. at which point, you'll add:
2 beaten eggs.

In another bowl, sift together:
4 1/4 c. all-purpose flour
1/2 c. sugar
1 1/4 tsp. soda
1 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. ground cloves
1/2 tsp. nutmeg (I grated about 1/3 of a fresh nutmeg - that made it extra spicy!)
dash of pepper (I'm more liberal with my pepper, but to each her own)

Mix the dry and wet stuff together, adding the flour slowly. By the end, your arm will be tired and the dough will be VERY dry. Chill.
Shape the dough into 1 in. balls, and bake on an ungreased cookie sheet at 375 for 12 minutes. Roll in 10X sugar.

Also, the pork and pear vanilla sauce recipe was deeeelish! How can you go wrong with wild rice, apple cider, Bosc pears and pork tenderloin? It was in the October 2004 issue of Cuisine at Home. If you want the recipe, let me know.

Had to sign a contingency extension on our purchase agreement, because there's NO F'ING WAY we'll make the Dec. 10 financing deadline, now. Bastages. Yannow, it's not a good sign when people can't get their acts together over a simple form letter. Such is life in academia, I suppose.

We went oot and aboot today to do car business things, buy a pair of windpants at Old Navy (god, has that place turned into a dump or what?!), and went for lunch and trivia (and beer) at Buffalo Wild Wings. Jeff and I were playing each other until dinkass BOB at the bar started playing and kicked our asses. Damn you, Bob. Then it was off to the game store, where we picked up Warcraft III. Now we're home, the boy is napping after becoming bored with the tutorial round of Warcraft, and I'm bouncing between laptops doing housebuying stuff and gaming stuff.

Still no letter from UIowa. I say again: BASTAGES!

Tonight, I bake the molasses cookies. Since these are more like real cookies, I think the boy will like them.

I don't know, man. Maybe they figure they can wait til I'm there before doing any paperwork? Kinda hard to GET THERE though, if the mortgage officers think I'm unemployed because I don't have a stupid letter.

In the real world, people get written offers. It's the default. Why don't I rate the same level of bureaucratic safety?

I love pfefferneuse. I think they go best with HOT BLACK coffee, and think they can't be properly appreciated by those who don't drink black coffee.

Just my guess.

By jove, I think she's got it!

That may the reason, right there. The Man rarely drinks coffee. He gets his caffeine from Diet Coke. . . and we KNOW that won't go with pfefferneusse.
