Christie is 14 years old now, and has been unwell for several months. She got a tummy bug and was sick for a few days, then stopped eating. We got the tummy bug cleared up, but she still wouldn't eat on her own. We hand-fed her, and she seemed to bounce back a little, asking for treats and eating little bits on her own, and I started to hope she'd eventually - although slowly - get better.

Two days ago, she got puny again. Restless, hanging her head, her hindquarters down when she walks. . . The vet suggested a potassium deficiency, and I think she was avoiding saying it's CRF, which is what it looks like.

Mom's taking Christie to see the vet this morning, to get a definite diagnosis. CRF is manageable, but terminal. I don't want her to suffer, but I don't want to take her to die in a vet's office, where she's always scared and miserable. I want her to die at home.

So please, if you can spare some good thoughts, send some Christie's way. I love her as a best friend, and am terrified of losing her. I know I will eventually, but I have a hard time really facing up to that fact.

Thinking good thoughts for you and kitty. I know how difficult this must be.

aww, poor sweet christie. well, mostly sweet and occasionaly really bitchy christie. :-) I guess that's part of her charm - knowing that she might haul off and take a bite out of your arm with no warning. :-)

I'll send some good mojo her way for ya.

I need to stop reading the CRF info sites. I'm crying and I'm at work.

This is awful.

Oh sweetie *hugs*

I can't offer anything more comforting than that, I'm afraid, but she's had a wonderful 14 years with you as a loving owner. Imagine -- she's had a far better life than many children out there.

True. Not many kitties (or children) are world travellers like she is. She was my Christmas present to myself when I was 15. . . The evil pet-store man took all my baby sitting money, but I knew I was rescuing her from a terrible fate.

She's been my best friend and companion for so long, it'll be hard to get used to being without her.

My beagle Chrissy was 16 when she finally passed away from lung cancer. My parents gave me to her when I was in kindergarten, and she was my companion all the way through school until the end of college. I still miss her.

My heart goes out to you and Christie.

My cat Stimpy stopped eating on me twice. It turned out it was due to Fatty Liver Disease. This occurs in overweight cats when in stressful situations (moving, for example).

Feeding by hand saved her once, but not the second time, as her liver shut down. I found out after the fact that feeding by hand in that situation provides only a 25% chance of recovery. What they do now is insert a shunt into the cat and you feed them with a injector. This offers a 80-85% chance of survival.

I hope Christie gets better soon.

*sighs*

We love them so much, they're like family. . . and they're with us for so little time in comparison.

14 is a good age for a cat.
I'm sending good thoughts.
