So unfair!

So I couldn't have ~bronwyn in my lj address because somebody already had the name. Well this somebody (born 02-26-85 according to her lj profile) hasn't posted since June 25th, 2001!

Sounds like she'd been have a really rough time of it, as 18 year olds are wont to do, and I hope she's doing better now.

But honey! Give up the page! Let me have my name! Please!

Ok, so there are other Bronwyn's out there too, champing at the bit, wishing they could have the name. I don't presume that I should be first in line. Although it would be nice . . . :-)

*sigh*

Edit: So Bronwyn #2's email addy is kaput. Next stop: LJ admins.

Edit #2 LJ admins don't read service requests. Okie dokie. There's no policy regarding dead-in-the-water journal for 1 or 2 or even 3 years journals. I'll never get any real help on this because the only people who will read the comment/question I sent are LJers like you and me.

Huh.

Ok, little picture, understandable.

Big picture. . . pathetic! So they can say "We have a million users!" No, no they don't. They have a million LJ accounts, some rather large proportion of which are quite dead. The LJ admins have no policy or mechanism in place to weed through the corpses. Poor planning guys. I'd think all those corpses would be taking up some valuable space. Am I wrong in thinking that?

Oh, well.

LAST EDIT: According to LJ. . . "No. LiveJournal does not delete accounts for inactivity.

Even though it may appear that a user is no longer updating their journal, this can be misleading; the user might be making Friends-Only posts, or simply use the account for reading friends' posts and commenting on them. Some users also find themselves without Internet access for prolonged periods of time, but will continue with their journal at a later date.

Additionally, usernames are not currently recyclable. Even if the journal were deleted, you wouldn't be able to claim the username. If your desired username is already taken, try a variant (such as adding numbers, extra letters, or underscores), or select another username entirely."

Hmmmm. Eeeenteresstink.

Ok then.

Monday update: The Big Experiment is underway. In an hour and a half I will head downstairs to begin gathering the first set of data. 1.5GB worth or so, I'm guessing. *crossing fingers*

You know, I've thought of some other user names I'd love to have. But I just can't give up tonya because it's just way too cool to have! :)

Well, I just wanted to have my own given name as my username :-) It's cool, reasonably unique and clearly underappreciated by the current username holder!

LOL!

Oh well.

Even my other usual nicks were taken. I guess I'm just not as creative when it comes to naming me as my parents were.

Corto stole my answer... but I was also thinking of suggesting petitioning to LJ to ask her on your behalf. (;

LOL, don't you just wish after a certain period of inactivity they'd retire names like that?

Good luck in your quest. Does this person have an email address that you could contact her at??

I'd considered it for a split second, but I think I may go through LJ first.

Hmmm. I dunno. It can't hurt to try, can it? :-)

Ok, so I wrote a very nice email, per your suggestions and found that monkeygirl (Bronwyn #2's putative address) no longer exists.

Lord, from the sounds of her last post and her mental state, I hope she's ok.

Anyway, it seems Mel's suggestion of going to LJ is the next step.

Let's try it!

I'd recommend writing her a note... maybe her lj email is still linked and she might be happy to give up the name. I have a friend in lj who gave up her name to someone that reallllllllly wanted it... and she was fine with it. :D

tried - see reply to kendokamel and my edit above - this gal has *poof* disappeared.

I've contacted LJ. We'll see what happens.

Did you know that LJ charges $15 for username changes?? Wow!

And they don't delete journals, so who knows what they'll do in the case of someone who has disappeared and whose contacts are no longer valid. *shrug*

*sit's back to wait*

about the username

Hey, Im just letting you know that the livejournal staff actually dont read your comments, normal users (like me) do, and we are the ones to answer your comments. So really, I doubt you'll ever get that username, in fact I'm 99% sure u wont. I dont mean to be cold and all, but livejournal basically lets all us ppl answer questions for free without recognition and the only reason I answer these complaints is because..well I'd like my complaint answered if i had one too! You can view your post here http://www.livejournal.com/support/see_request.bml?id=96497
And I do agree with you, names no longer in use should be purged and available for re-use.

Gee, that really blows. Another friend of mine has noted that her favorite name was already taken by somebody who opened a journal on 10/3/00 and hasn't posted since 10/17/00. You'd think there would be some sort of policy about dead journals. Heh. Maybe we could start a petition *smirk*

Thanks, Naidy for responding. It was very kind of you :-)

oh, it is. lol i dunno if it's as bad as ujournal.org, but i'm pretty sure; as this is the original. [livejournal.com profile] cdenise (think i got that right) was having a real problem getting her answers in the support area approved. i was too. we both think it's some kinda clique to block out regular users from racking up codes. it's funny how the faq/help answers are spread out, too... so it's hard to get the answer yourself or even find out that you get codes for racking up support points. eh. i think the not deleting names thing is a ploy to get more users to pay, because you have to pay to change your name and also they'll claim their bandwidth/server space is being sapped. wonder why when you're got a bunch of dead journals that people keep constantly hitting up to see if they've deleted yet. lol
