I'd like to pat myself on the back for a few moments... I stayed up late last night and finished the quilt top. It looks pretty fantastic, if I do say so myself :-D

Here you can see the details in the vintage fabrics. The only non-vintage pattern is the yellow - everything else is from the 1930s.

How long did it take to make?

Not very. The pattern is simple (I didn't have to sew each little square) - If I'd not been interrupted by life, I could have had it done in a week.

Fantastic! Did you use old feedsack cloth? I've got a yard or so of feedsack cotton, white with small orange flowers (and brown leaves and stems). I haven't decided what to do with it yet.

Wow. That's gorgeous?

Do you sew by hand or do you use a machine?

These were just off-the-bolt cottons from a little quilt shop in the Amana colonies. Of course I move back home and find some of the same fabrics at Hancock. So much for exotic and special, right?

Feedsack cotton... what is that?

Machine.

When I do the actual quilting though, that's going to be by hand, and that's the part that scares the bejabbers out of me.

It's so cool. Now I want to tackle something really nuts - like a double wedding ring or a Jane Austen (http://www.jasa.net.au/quilt.htm#make). Holy crap, lookit that!

Yeah, well, multitalented is all fine and dandy, but finished projects are better :) I'll really be proud when I finish it - and when I finish the log cabin afghan I'm making for Jeff - and when I finish the ginormous cross-stitch I haven't touched since we moved back to Kentucky...

Oh, to be a woman of leisure!

The piecing wasn't difficult - although if I'd been a stickler for matching corners, it would have been. The truly difficult part is the actual quilting. THAT requires patience!

Yeah, that's why I'm dead-dog tired today - I stayed up for 2 hours after the baby was in bed to finish it up. And that's just the top. Quilting it is going to be a bear.

Good golly, if I'd started this a few years ago.... i had no idea it could be so simple. I'm intimidated by the quilting part, though. Piecing is fun and relatively easy compared to the quilting.

This looks like a good primer:
http://www.womenfolk.com/quilting_history/feedsacks.htm

Cloth bags that held flour, sugar, etc. were re-used by women for quilts and clothes. Thrifty ladies, our ancestors.

it's so pretty. :)

are you going to machine or hand quilt it? o.O

I machine-pieced it, but I plan to hand-quilt it... if only because I haven't a machine capable of quilting and I haven't the funds to pay someone else to quilt it.

I need a thimble.
