Fucking blue screen of death, man. So much for that happy little post I was in the middle of writing. Suddenly, everything froze and it went to a blue screen that told me "beginning physical memory dump". Now, I didn't panic overly much because this same thing happened to Jeff's computer just the other day. I turned it off, waited, and restarted. It was fine. What the fuck?!?
*sigh*
Only lost one picture from my seminar presentation, which was open at the time. That's ok, I'll find it again. I also lost my post. The second go-round is rarely as good as the first for me, but here's what I was trying to say. . .
We're now at T minus 25 hours and 45 minutes. And, until 5 minutes ago, I was still smiling. I'll smile again, but I'm still pissed right now.
I bought 1250 sheets of paper yesterday, 500 of that in 24 lb. 100% cotton bond, the remainder in 20lb 25% cotton bond. Very pretty, and $40 some-odd that I get to write off of my taxes in April. I found a printer nearby who'd never heard of 100% cotton bond, but who will print my dissertation for less if I bring my own paper. Good. Also found two binderies, one that's out in BFE and charges $50 per book, the other is reasonably close (close to my favorite music store and Lynn's Paradise Cafe), and is run by a very very old man (from the sound of him) who will charge $35 per book. Guess who'll be getting my business? I hope he has a choice of colors. I want red, but if purple is available, I'll just have to go for it!
I also have to pay $45 for copyrighting and $60 for microfilming.
Thank goodness for my old NIH Training Grant. They give us $300 toward finishing our dissertations. Good little NIH. The rest will go in the Education deductions section of my 1040. Yay!
Jeffrey will get home from work shortly after 6, and then we'll hit the road for Bton as soon as we can after that. We'll have a scrum-diddly-uptious dinner at Siam House, then head back to the hotel to watch the Astros kick Cardinal ass. I hope.
I still don't know what I'm going to do with the boys tomorrow morning. I have to get to campus early if I want any chance of finding a place for my car, but I don't want the boys to be stuck there all morning. The greenhouses of Jordan Hall are fantastic, but not 5 1/2 hours worth of fantastic. Maybe they'll want to stay at the hotel and take a cab. Hmmm. I could go in early, then walk to the Runcible Spoon to meet them for a late breakfast. . . then walk with them back to Jordan. Hmmmmm
I'll take suggestions from the locals in the audience.
I'm excited and just beginning to feel a wee bit nervous. The butterflies will be with me (they just arrived about 30 minutes ago) for the duration, I'm sure. So long as they go away once I get started, I'll be fine.
Yeeks!
Edited to add: Okay, this thing has crapped out three times now. Every time, I restart and everything's ok. Cleaned up the disk, ran a frag analysis (fine), and I'm about to run the disk check, which will also say everything is fine, if Jeff's laptop is any example. In any case, I'm not going to futz anymore with ant.bio.indiana.edu today. Not even to backup my presentation. I'll do that tomorrow, from what should be a safer hook-up. WEIRD
