The generator wasn't enough
Sep. 18th, 2008 09:09 amIt was the candles. Yep, I finally pulled about half a dozen candles out and lit them around the bedroom so I could decompress my hips while Jeff and I surfed house plans on the laptop.
He'd plugged the modem into the generator, you see, so we were net-enabled for a time :)
The modem wasn't working at first, and we realized the generator had shut off and my parents were out topping off the gas and oil. Bingo, back came the generator and the 'net. A few minutes after that, I wrangled myself out of bed to pop my pelvis and go perform my evening ablutions, when I heard a faint "foom" sound.
"Power's back," Jeff said.
I flipped the switch and YES! Power!
I hustled into my robe and opened the door to downstairs, and flipped the light switches on and off several times, to give my parents a demonstration. "Hey guys!"
So after a few minutes of coiling up extension cords and replugging appliances - Jeff even started a load of laundry - we were back in business. Hooray!
And Samuel was very pleased this morning to see his ceiling fans were working again :)
I was pleased to have the monitor working again - I missed being able to hear him at night.
I'm really very surprised that we're back up so quickly, and I know that some of our Prospect neighbors who live closer to the river are going to SOL for much longer. It makes me feel a little guilty, so I'm not going to say much about it here at work, where one co-worker lives in Indiana and has power but no water, and my other co-worker lives in Prospect and is making do with her neighbor's generator power. Another coworker is still without power, too.
It figures the bosses have been powered up the whole time... no wonder they were all cavalier and business-as-usual about it!
Anyway, things are back to normal in our household, and I am very glad. Although I think I'm going to keep going to bed early, and the tv won't be on much, and Samuel and I will still be spending a lot of our time outdoors. Some things are too good to give up!
