Holy moly, it's been 18 months! How did this happen?!

Yes, today is Samuel's 18 months-day, and I am amazed when I look at him and see how much he's grown. Some days, he looks like such a big boy, but sometimes I can still see the baby we brought home.

I think he's a little over 22 lbs now, and I'm not sure how tall... we've postponed his pediatric appointment until after the arrival of Little Bit. This gives him a little more time to pick up a word or two so I don't have to argue with Dr. R about speech therapy. Honestly, I'm not worried about the fact that Samuel's vocabulary is limited to buh and da and ya and "mo mo". Frustrated at times, yes, but not worried :)

He says "buh" or "bah" for many things, but he says it for book and ball, and it's clear he knows what these things are, so I've decided to count those. He's also recently begun to shake his head "no" in answer to questions - particularly questions such as, "can you say 'daddy'?" He shakes his head for yes, too, so that can be a little confusing, but he also accompanies the head shake with a "ya" or "na" syllable... still not in any clear pattern, but it's there and I count it! The "mo mo" comes from one of his favorite books, "Ten Little Monkeys". He puts his hand on his head when we read, "one fell off and bumped her head", and then shakes his finger saying, "mo mo" when we read, "no more monkeys jumping on the bed!" When we bring the book in the car with us, he reads it to himself and does the gestures, too.

I've had dreams the last two nights, where Samuel started speaking in 3- and 4-word sentences. I told him about the dreams, and pointed out that, as my son, it's his responsibility to fulfill my dreams. In reply, he smiled and opened his mouth for another bite of my cereal.

He loves sitting in my lap while I read "Bad Kitty", "Sammy the Seal", "Danny the Dinosaur", and "Fox in Socks". I'm proud to say that I am an excellent "Fox in Socks" reader and can more often than not make it through the whole book without a flub-up. Yesterday, he had me reading it upside down, too.

He has finally sprouted more teeth - three at once, this time! - two more on the bottom in front, and one molar, top left. That explains all the knee-biting and crabbing of late.

I think he's developing some awareness of his bodily functions, but I'm not certain because he isn't consistent about it.

For the past couple of months, I've been too big to handle the kneeling and reaching involved in bathing Samuel in the tub, so he's been showering with me in the evenings. We've got one of those 2-person showers, so it's much easier to maneuver. It's become a beloved ritual for him now, and for the past week he's been the one to take me by the hand and lead me to our bathroom when he decided it was shower-time. He has so much fun running back and forth through the spray, crawling around and between my legs, and dancing. One evening I took his hands and sang London Bridge while dancing in a circle. It was all just a ploy to get him under the water to rinse, but he took to it and loves it. Now he stands there and reaches for my hands and dances while I sing.

He's a very busy boy, but he's also affectionate and (at least for now) he enjoys sharing. At a recent party, he shared his cookies and cheerios with little 14 month-old Sophia, and he always wants to share goodies with his cousin Gage, who's 11 months old now. He loves the water, running in the grass, chasing the dogs, and petting the cats.

I know I'm forgetting something, so I'll have to come back to this, I think.

My mom sends me pictures like this all the time. I need to upload the ones where he's climbed between the stacking tables, and where he climbed up onto the rocker.

My Sam and your Samuel sound similar in many ways. Sam uses a few words, but he's not much of a talker. I am not worried about it because his recognition and social skills are pretty apparent. Seems to be the same for Samuel.

He is so cute, btw!

I hope this doesn't sound terrible...
Often when I read such stories from other moms I groan and wonder why I'm being subjected to it (I've got a friend who emails updates sporadically and I groan, skim and delete) but I genuinely enjoy reading yours.

Maybe it's because your child is the best. :)

I heard a story from my dad about one of his cousin's kids. Apparently, his 2nd birthday had passed without a word. Then one day, Barbara loaded the kids in the car and said, "oh! I forgot the (whatever)" to which little Speechless replied, "That's ok, I'll get it mamma."

O_O

So there's hope :)

That doesn't sound terrible. I'm sure plenty of people on my FL are thoroughly uninterested in reading about my maternal life.

I'm glad you do :)
