Happy Hallmark Holiday
May. 11th, 2003 02:01 pmYes, I called my mother today to do my daughterly duty. We laughed. Mom's not the type to want appreciation on a particular day determined by a greeting card company. She's more the year-round appreciation type. And she doesn't go for cards and flowers and chatchkies, either.
I'm back at work today, after having a pretty good time at a party last night. I chatted it up with people I don't get to see very often, and met a couple of new people, too. Lots of good conversation and laughter. I guess I left a little early, if you can call 2am early, but even though I was still having fun I felt tired too.
I enjoyed a nice walk home with a gal from the department who lives in my neighborhood. The fresh air felt great, the breeze was just starting to really kick up, and the sky every so often lit up with bright flashes of lightening.
I managed to brush my teeth and wash my face, and I did drink a tall glass of water before I crawled into bed. . . but I'm pretty sure I was asleep within a couple of minutes after that.
As usual, my eyes popped wide open at 10 'til 6. Sheesh. Am I trained, or what?
It's a beautiful day out there, but windy as all get-out. My poor garden is getting a little beaten up :-/
So, tired and feeling like a Sunday, I was lazy for a few hours - I hung out in my robe over waffles and Kalifornia (yeah, that's relaxing!). I finally dressed and here I am, back at the lab.
Off I go to start crunching data - again. That same damn stack of 27 GB. This time, maybe, I may have the set up that will work, but I'm starting all. over. again. Not only am I starting over, but I have to CONVERT all my 16-bit images to 8-bit images. . . and before I can do that, I have to duplicate all the files. Those of you in the know will know that that process alone takes hours.
Fun.
And then there's always all the other stuff I need to be figuring out that I can never seem to wrap my brain around when I want to. Dammit.
Let's see what I can manage to accomplish today.

Date: May 11th, 2003 12:56 pm (UTC)....ah, back in the day.....I remember when I was in grad school and our group bought a 1Gb disc (for everyone's data, and for a lot of cash). Otherwise, people had 20Mb (!!) hard discs and didn't expect to fill them.....ever!
I bought a mac G4 6 months ago. Stuffed it full of discs (750Gb) and they are full already. Plus 6 additional external discs....all full.

Date: May 11th, 2003 02:53 pm (UTC)The computer I'm using has a stuper-fast processor. . . for two years ago. So my processing is going more slowly than I would like.
It also means there's a lot of trotting back and forth across the lab.
*trot trot trot* Type in a string. Return. Return.
*trot trot trot* Do some piddly stuff at my desk or bench for 5-10 minutes.
*trot trot trot* Type in a string. Return. Return.
Rinse. Repeat. Over and over and over. . .
Groan.
