There is nothing more pleasant than to start your day with a rebellion on your hands.

I've been asked to compile a simple database of the most commonly used E. coli strains in the lab. A toolbox, if you will. MP wants not only the database, but also a common stocks box that everyone can access freely without having to beg and borrow from labmates. Sounds good to me. I have no desire to dig through someone else's freezer box on a Sunday night because I need a strain and only so-and-so has it.

Besides which, I came from a lab where everything we made was entered into the general stocks. We kept personal stocks for things we used the most.

Not so, here, and apparently the thought of any change is some sort of horror. GB wrote back to me saying that he'd rather use Filemaker Pro than Access, which is fine with me. I'm not married to Access by any means, but I don't own Filemaker Pro so if you want your db in FP then YOU get to put it together, Mr. Smarty.

I got another message from GB posted within 20 minutes of the first message, proclaiming that he refuses to make any more frozen stocks.

Excuse me? For those of you new to microbiology, let me tell you what it takes to make a frozen stock. Take a tube of media (they're premade here), use a stick to gouge some frozen cells from your stock and swish in the tube. Incubate. The next day, squirt some of those cells into a little tube with a squirt of glycerol. Done. Total hands-on time required: 15 minutes.

Suck it up, dude.

I told him we'd only need maybe half of the 20 or so E. coli strains he's got. (Up that time requirement to maybe 40 minutes. Maybe.)

He then came over to my desk with a grin on his face and said that he is not, under any circumstances, going to make any fresh stocks. I tried again (with smile firmly on face) to say Dude, it's easy. Just do it. But still he refused. We can have his stocks when he leaves. (Um, you're on year 3 of an 8 year plan. That's a long time to wait.) Fine. Inoculate the cultures and I'LL freeze the little bastards down. (yes, I said 'little bastards') Nope. Fine. Then take it up with Matt, because this is just silly.

Jeezopete. I feel like crying out, "Respeck mah authoritah!" Only, I'm not really sure what kind of authoritah I have.

In other news, I just got to talk to AT back in my old lab about her data analysis woes. Poor girl wound up in the same trap that tripped me up 3 years ago (almost to the week). Since I had already suffered the trauma though, I was able to get her out of it pretty easily. It will be tedious and boring as all hell, but at least it's simple and she's not lost any data. Yay!

I'm still playing the waiting game on most of my equipment, but I'm going to go get a few small items today so I can do a simple experiment on Monday. Must. Do. Benchwork.

In other news, I have no other news, but I've been told that we will know the Seattle/Iowa decision next Wednesday. This is good, because I was not willing to wait much longer. If we don't get a decision on Wednesday, watch me pitch a royal fit.

I think it was a misunderstanding. He read my email, which says one thing, and thought it said something entirely different. I'll clear him up later :)

I have never seen such paranoia, nastiness, possessiveness and 'willingness to take anyone out (completely out,) if they dare cross my ego' than in the grad school and above world.

You can have it.
