I can't send any outgoing communications. Not more than these little blurbs. I can only send out through g-mail (and it doesn't matter which broswer I use to do it). Can't do any other webmail, can't post here, can't do anything at Distributed Proofreaders.

That tells me it's the BellSouth modem. BellSouth says it's my programs and they won't help me. I'm asking for a new modem and I'm being treated like I'm asking for the moon.

So, computer geeks, what could be wrong? And why should I have to pay $75 for them to replace their shitty equipment?

Sounds like it's their fault to me...But you may have to hire a lawyer to convince them.

The online "help" person - Latisha - was trying to tell me it was my firewall. Well, dear, I turned off every firewall and security safeguard I've got and it still doesn't work. Blazin' fast browsing, though, thanks!

The modem they sold to Jeff in '02 is out of warranty, so we have to pay $75 for a new one. Whadda ripoff!

I just hope the new modem fixes the problem :-/

Do you have another computer at your house?...If you had another one you could go on-line with it and prove that it's not your firewall that is causing the problem...I went round and round with SBC earlier this year...First they said it was my wiring...then my modem...It turned out the problem was at their "central office" the whole time...Good luck...The lower level techs often know less than the customer does and only create more confusion.

Yes, I've been meaning to pull out Jeff's computer to test it. Doing that now :)

And yes, the techs more often than not seem to know less than I do.

Oh, dear. Jeff's computer let me post a long post and let me proof a page at DP. Let's see if my computer shaped up by some miracle. . .

Uh oh. My computer's still acting up. Now I'm really confused. It's a few years old and has already had to have a new hard drive. Are these signs of impending death?

I really don't know what to do, other than to start using Jeff's computer for everything. We've talked about wiping mine clean and setting it up as a dedicated telescope-pointer. Maybe we're at that point and I should stop banging my head against the wall.

I only wish I'd known this before spending $75 we don't have on that new modem.

I signed up with Distributed Proofreaders. I did a bunch of proofreading the first day and have forgotten to go back since.

Wish I could help you with your computer problems.

I really enjoy DP - I've been working on a 1611 Italian-English dictionary. It's a lot of work, but it's so much fun to come across the crude gems :)
