I put on a little pin that says:
Finding Your Voice
National Day of Silence
Today is the National Day of Silence, a day of protest - a silent protest - to help people realize that the voices of people in the GLBT community are silenced by the evils of fear and hatred.
This tradition was begun by an 18 year old U. Virginia student named Maria Pulzette in 1996 as the Day of Silence when 150 students participated. It went national in 1997, when nearly 100 colleges and universities participated. High schools joined in in 1998.
Here is a link to the full history.
I am not an undergraduate or a teenager, I am a graduate student adult with adult problems and job responsibilities that will probably require some amount of speaking today.
So I will wear my pin in pride and will explain to all who ask the meaning and importance of the message behind it.
