Wendy McElroy is a columnist over at Fox News (don't run away, you guys. I have a feeling that most of you guys will probably like what you read here) who writes the ifeminists column.

Today, she writes The Marriage Quagmire, which pretty well describes what I feel on the matter of marriage in this country - between heterosexuals and homosexuals alike.

[livejournal.com profile] ashfault76, I think this is something along the lines of what you've been hearing and thinking about.

I would be hard-pressed to disagree.

Discuss.

Yes, I believe that marriage should be one man, one woman, for a lifetime. A multitude of religious and moral reasons exist for this in my opinion, BUT...

You can't legislate morality. I don't want to press my beliefs (although I believe them to be the truth) through law on a homosexual any more than I would want an atheist to tell me that I couldn't practice my faith. The freedom to decide for ourselves is what makes this country a great place to live, and I hope it stays in place.

What ashfault says is true.. There is a double standard when it comes to hospital visits, government entitlements, etc. This could be resolved with civil unions. Calling it marriage is going to cause all sorts of unnecessary grief, as people will immediately protest when the legal definition of what they perceive as a sacred union is changed to include something they stand against.

I'm not sure what else to say about it. On a moral level, I have a problem with the practice. However, limiting this is setting a precedent for the decay of our liberties, and that's a Bad Thing (TM).
