. . . but I do it anyway, because I can't stand what's going on. Really, I don't think the federal government has any business sticking its nose anywhere near marriage. I think perhaps "marriage" should be left for religion to deal with and couples (any couples) who want to make life-long commitments to each other should be able to do so through civilly contracted ceremonies at the state level.

At that point, we'd have no need for all this Marriage Protection garbage because the conservatives could do whatever the hell they wanted in their churches. The bottom line for me is that people who want to make this commitment to each other should be able to do so, and they should be afforded all the civil rights accordingly. Any discrimination by gender, orientation or gender preference and we may as well be back in 1910. We should be better than that by now.

So I sent this letter via the HRC today. I've sent many such letters, and have received several responses from my Indiana representatives and one from the White House. Deaf ears, all. But I continue to speak out, because I know the opposition voices are horrid and loud.

As your constituent, I am writing to tell you that the so-called "Marriage Protection Week" is a false and misleading campaign, and a mean-spirited attack on gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender families.

I also urge you to oppose any attempt to amend the Constitution of the United States and any state constitution to permanently discriminate against GLBT people and families.

(Edit Letter Below)
Marriage Protection Week is a disgusting insult to thousands of loving families throughout our country, and those who support do not know the meaning of unconditional love. What a shame for them. I am ashamed of them, and I am disgusted by them. Please do not join their ranks, speak out against this horrible insult and instead speak out in support of all loving families, regardless of the sexual orientations of those who lead them.

Wow, I had never heard of this "Marriage Protection Week" until this post... and I did some research on it. Yikes. Some of the information I've found makes me extremely angry. I must stop before I rant on and on about how stupid it all is...

Rant away, but rant at your state representatives. Let them know how you feel.

Makes my skin crawl.

Also makes me wonder what the history books will say about all this in 100 years...

it seems to me that if ever there was a need for seperation of church and state it is on this issue...to deny non-heterosexual people the right to marry and and enjoy the same civil rights as heterosexual people do is a violation of the constitution...a civil marriage should not be subject to religious qualifications...they say they aim to protect the institution of marriage...and they do this by trying to kill any love that is different from their own.
