I leave lj alone for just a couple of days (ok, technically 2 and a half) and come back to find that my lj friends have been little writing fiends.

Y'all are going to make me look bad.

I don't have much to write about today. Mostly, I'm just pooped out. I went to a They Might Be Giants concert last night. What a lot of fun! I haven't listened to TMBG since I was in boarding school. My friend Nancy and I used to listen to

The sun is a mass of incandescent gas,
a vast thermonuclear furnace. . .

Not to mention "Istanbul (Constantinople)" and "Particle Man"

I can't remember the song titles, but I remembered the songs.

I had a ton of fun, and the two vodka tonics I had didn't give me a migraine (yay!), but I was up WAY past my bedtime last night, so I've been drowsy all day. I still managed to get to work by 8, at which point I had to park my car a block away from my building because my favorite lot was already full. I did my best to get all my business done today, and I was actually successful on that count, but I was just. so. tired. I felt as though I were moving through molasses.

Even the two doughnuts and cup of coffee didn't perk me up - although I'm sure they did wonders for my astronomical calorie count for the day.

So yeah. I've been thinking about sleep and food all day. I've eaten plenty of food, so I guess I'll go take care of that other little requirement, sleep.

Oh. In case any of you are interested, I'm reading this book about the colonization of Virginia, Walter Ralegh and Elizabeth I and I learned a funny little tidbit:

King James I had a phobia of water. He didn't drink it and he never ever ever bathed. So, understandably, he stank to high heaven and itched a lot. So the King of England, James I scratched at himself, day in and day out. And, when he was nervous, he had a rather distressing habit of fiddling with his codpiece.

I just had to share that with you. When I read this, I laughed for a good while, and I still laugh when I think of it.

Bronwyn,

Don't be a pansy. Everyone knows that staying out late and drinking on a Tuesday night is entirely socially acceptable if you get your ass rocked, like you do at a They Might be Giants concert or, I don't know, some kind of kinky ass-sex key party or something. Anyway, the point is, don't be afraid to

It's called "Big Chief Elizabeth" by Giles Milton. It's a great book - he's used the original journals and letters (as many that are still extant) to build a picture of the whole 25 years or so. Not a novel and not a dry documentary. It's something in between and quite good.
