I started A Big Experiment today. . . with luck this will be the Last Big Experiment.

I'll start the microscopy tomorrow morning and will basically go through the whole 'scope, analyse, lather rinse repeat process for the next week. The difference this time are two-fold: (1) the strains are different and (2) I'm house sitting instead of crashing at Melissa's.

(1) means that the results may at least be a little more interesting, because they'll be new.

(2) means that, well means that I'm taking care of lizards and turtles and fishes and froggies and learning how to use a gas oven/stove and trying to figure out how the hell their can opener works.

But at least I've got a $210 check for my troubles.

I'm working on three books right now, when I shouldn't be doing any personal reading at all. My excuse is that all three books are culturally and intellectually edifying.
The Tale of Genji - I'm almost finished with this monster tome
The Blind Watchmaker - All about evolution and how logic and evidence preclude (or make unnecessary) a Designer
Calculus Made Easy - Yes, I am a nerd. Shut up. It's a great book.

I am reading that last one with notebook and pen in hand.

Shut up.

Well someone's got to read the calulus books.

You know, I've still got your fudge in my fridge... and I haven't touched it.

As for the gas range... I'm betting that once you figure it out, you'll be really impatient when you get back to your electric one. (;

But you're not using a pocket protector, so you're okay.

The lizards and frogs and fishes will be grateful for the attention, I'm sure.

Glasses, check.

Pocket protector, nope.

Good. I'm still on This Side of Nerdiness.

Oh, my god! I must get a copy of Calculus Made Easy! Must, must, must. I've had a secret love affair with calculus ever since I almost failed in h.s. and then triumphed as a college freshman. I saved my college calculus notebook and glance over the beautiful, handwritten equations from time to time.

Thanks for mentioning this!

Yay, a kindred soul!

Calculus Made Easy - Sylvanus Thomspon

I bought the newest edition, edited by Martin Gardner. . . This one (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0312185480/103-2202481-6536644?v=glance). Barnes and Noble ordered it for me, so I didn't have to pay any s&h. Should've checked amazon first, cuz it's cheaper there. Damn.

Anyway, I'm enjoying it, and realizing just what my calculus stumbling blocks were. . . AlgebraII, I think.

Let me know if you get it so we can nerd-out together.

I'm starting Calc I in a month, and it terrifies me. Can you recommend a good "Calculus for Morons" book? Or is that a good one?

This is the one you want, definitely.

It's written in plain english and actually EXPLAINS (imagine that!) what everything means.

That nerd business came from your dad's side of the family. I used to do "math" just to relax. Had a couple college books that I worked my way thru just for fun!

So glad to hear about Christie! Wonderful news.

Dingo has learned to open the new screened door to the patio! I no longer have to prop it open for him.

Calculus is the reason I went into marketing.

Glad your cat is back.
